Knicks have fired President Steve Mills
Knicks hired Mills on 9/26/2013. Knicks record since: 178-365 Knicks playoff appearances since: 0 Knicks coaches since: 6 (two interim) + the hiring of Phil Jackson as President
His draft record isn't that bad. Ntilkina was a bad pick and Knox isn't looking that great but he did go against the grain to get Porzingis. RJ Barrett was the right pick and he made a couple nice 2nd rd choices with Dotson and Mitchell Robinson.
His track record with free agency. AWFUL. He gave Robin Lopez 4 years 60M just to trade him a year later. Gave THJ a 4 year 71M deal just to salary dump him later. His 2016 splurge was as awful as others committing over 150M to Courtney Lee, Noah and Lance Thomas. Then his laughable 2019 free agency where they sold the stars only to settle for Julius Randle, Portis, Payton, Gibson, Ellington, Bullock, Marcus Morris.
He's made several trades but outside of the Porzingis trade and unloading Melo onto OKC, none have been that significant. I honestly forgot he traded for Derrick Rose.
Anyhow, he sucks. At best he seems like someone who can be part of a draft room. Time to move on.

Via @nbacrouse "The Mavericks have real interest in Alec Burks, per a source.
Burks is averaging 16.1 points while shooting 37.5% from 3 this season. He's on a $1.6M veteran minimum deal."
Mavs going back to the Warriors well.
Makes sense for the Mavs, who could use a little more scoring punch next to Luka, Porzingis and THJ. Burks also gives them another ball-handler.

Berman says Portis is a buyout candidate for the Knicks - along with Ellington
Portis is a 6'10" 246 big with range. Career 35.9% on threes and had made at least 1 per game last 3 seasons. Viable scorer, capable rebounder. If he shakes free, I imagine a good # of teams will look his way but he has Rockets written all over him.

Darren Collison has decided to stay retired and will not return to the NBA this season. The veteran guard has informed the Lakers and Clippers that the timing of his return "wasn't right", league sources told ESPN.

That's a bummer. Collison's ball handling, defense at PG and SG, 3pt shooting and vet experience would have been a nice boost to the bench of the Lakers.
Instead the team has to turn to the likes of Waiters, JR Smith, Ellington, Tyler Johnson if they want backcourt help. Not the worst options but none of them particularly address the Lakers' supposed need for additional ball-handling.

Matthew Dellavedova may be a buyout candidate.
Experience with Lebron from 2014-2015 and the title team of 2015-2016. 52 games and 18.8mpg of postseason experience. Good ball handler / distributor. Pesky defender. *Was* a solid 3pt shooter when he was with Lebron in CLE and Greek Freak in MIL. Not so much on the crappy Cavs team of late.
He'd probably be my top option among the aforementioned guards.

As much as I think he can be a headcase..I think Waiters (who the Lakers are planning to talk to) would be a good fit. I don't see him causing any fuss on this team.
But I'd agree on Delly too.

I'd take Delly over Waiters. I think Waiters is still struggling with some off the court issues so I question if his head is in the game. Memphis just cut him without even taking a chance.

If the Lakers were in the market for a ball-stopper who can get hot but more often than not sucks on offense and doesn't play consistent defense to the point teams have been better with him off the court than on pretty much his entire career, then sure. Assuming he is actually healthy of course.

you think McCollum for Hield would be reasonable for both sides or nah In real life or fantasy? Either way, they are pretty much the same player. I'd probably take Hield over McCollum just because of size and he's not playing with a ball dominating guard as much so I can see more shots but I don't think it's that much difference.

IF Portland were to considering moving CJ, they would certainly insist on Hield + a decent amount more. Surprisingly McCollum (Born: 9/1991) is not that much older than Hield (Born: 12/1992) If the gap was like 4 years apart, then maybe there is more cause for a straight swap. McCollum has a much more proven track record with 5 straight seasons of 20-3-3 + solid 3pt shooting, relative durability and has been a fixture for a very solid Blazers squad. Hield started with New Orleans and let's not kid ourselves, no one in Sacramento really cares about him - the fanbase or apparently the team itself. He's been solid statistically the last two seasons but for a bum Kings team and his whining first about the Kings' initial free agent offer and then about the team having "trust issues" isn't helping his reputation.
Honestly, if Portland craps out this year, they should consider moving CJ but for an upgrade at PF. Between a pretty nice looking SG in Trent Jr., 2018 1st rd pick Simons, 2019 1st rd pick Nassir Little, Rodney Hood presumably picking up his player option coming off a major injury, they are pretty good at SG/SF - with decisions on Ariza and Hezonja as well. At PF obviously Melo is not a real answer and who knows with Zach Collins, also coming off a major injury and not exactly blowing the doors open when he did play. Could they look at Kevin Love, Aaron Gordon, Julius Randle......
Here is my pitch. A foundation of:
McCollum to San Antonio Aldridge + Derrick White to Portland (LA has said he wants to go back)
Spurs gets a pure scorer next to Murray and gives them a "star" of sorts with DeRozan's status up in the air - my guess is they sign and trade him. Popovich hates to rebuild and this allows them to stay competitive and yet move on from DeRozan/Aldridge. Blazers get a solid PF who they are very familiar with having been there 9 seasons - 3 w/ Dame. Would soften the PR blow of trading away CJ. White is a quality PG/SG to cover the gap in value given Aldridge is... well... old.

To be a Pop team..I still say the Spurs roster is a clutter mess. They have way too many guards that have the same role. and all Pop is doing it giving each one 20-25 minutes a game.
But it seems like we've said Blazers needs to break up their backcourt for a few years now.
Hield puts up the stats..I never really watch him play but he shoots/scores.

I probably wouldn't target Aldridge but I do agree bolstering that frontcourt next to a returning Nurkic would be my priority. My reservation about Aldridge would be him being 35 years old this offseason and only having a year left on his deal. The throw-in of White would pretty much just make a cluttered backcourt even more. So if I'm going to part with McCollum, I think I would look towards a younger player that would be my new foundation with Dame for years to come. I probably would be more apt to targeting Julius Randle or Aaron Gordon.
Plus I wouldn't be shocked if Pops walks away either this year or next year at the latest. Sure the Spurs family would keep him involved in basketball as much as he wants but he just looks like a guy whose passion has fizzled out and he has reasons, on and off the court, to be tired. So I can see the Spurs getting close to that reset button. They should've entertained being sellers before, IMO.

Spurs trading Bertans to the Wizards for cap space...to sign Marcus Morris..him spurning them for the Knicks really hurt. Having Morris would have made them much better..and losing Bertans because of it is a big blow.
But I'd for sure move Aldridge, and tack on White or Forbes or Lonnie Walker or Belinell or Patty Mills.
Although I like White..I'd keep him, probably stuck with Beli. They probably want to keep Mills. So Lonnie & Forbes

I 100% agree they should have been sellers. Or at the least they should have been buyers to try and get that 8th seed to keep their playoff streak alive. Some kind of objective. That they did nothing is just a confounding decision. Barring a hot 2nd half, they're realistically going to finish with around 36 to 38 wins and miss the playoffs, which accomplishes nothing and enter the summer with a ton of question marks.
Do they re-sign DeRozan if he opts out? For their sake I hope not. Sign and trade is the most logical. Do they trade Aldridge? 100% they should but the return may not be much given his age, salary and likely preference for destinations. Do they trade Gay and Mills? 100% they should. Both are overpaid but at the least they are expiring deals. Do they trade White? No clue but they should. He has solid value and isn't an ideal fit next to Murray. Do they trade Carroll? Yes but good luck with that since he has 2 years on his deal and has been dead weight.
After that, the question is: Do they retool as they always do? If Popovich sticks around, this is my guess. The Kawhi trade shows Pops has no interest in sticking around for a rebuild. Do they rebuild, finally? If Popovich goes, absolutely they should. May as well make history too and name Becky Hammon head coach. Outside of Murray, who are their foundation pieces? Walker? Keldon? Bringing back Poeltl? Lyles? Samanic? The aforementioned White? They are all 25 and under but only White has a significant role this season. So not exactly a bunch oozing with upside as of yet.
It's kind of weird to see the Spurs in such a state of disarray. At least they have a good amount of young talent, don't have any awful contracts beyond 2021 and are looking at big time cap space that summer and they own all of their picks except their 2022 2nd rounder. So they have the flexibility to fix things. Question is, what direction do they take?

Can you imagine if Portland flops this season, they'd want to shake things up enough where they trade like CJ McCollum, Trevor Ariza and Jusuf Nurkic for a re-signed DeRozan and Aldridge and then just re-sign Whiteside and Melo.
PG: Dame/Simons SG: Trent/Hood SF: DeRozan/Little PF: Aldridge/Melo C: Whiteside/Collins
Sounds just like those Blazer teams of the late 90s/early 2000s that just had a bunch of aging veterans (like Pippen, Kemp, Sabonis, Dale Davis etc) mixed in with random younger players

Top 10 most likely to be traded:
Beal Bjelica A. Gordon Embiid G. Harris Holiday Ntilikina CP3 M. Turner Wiggins
Embiid would be surprising but not entirely implausible if they have a disappointing postseason and they decide the Simmons/Embiid pairing doesn't work. Beal I see only if he demands a trade Harris, Wiggins and Paul I certainly see being shopped - it's finding a taker and what they can get back is the question Bjelica, Ntilikina - sure, I guess Turner, AGordon and Holiday will definitely be big prizes this summer in a weak FA market and I see all 3 being traded and getting a nice haul back

I said this before and I'll say it now, even as a Michigan fan this was a dumb hire to begin with.
Frankly I have no clue if the Cavs have any idea about their long term plan in the post Lebron era.

Via The Athletic
William Guillory of The Athletic said it's a "foregone conclusion" that the Pelicans will be signing Brandon Ingram to a max contract this summer. A max contract would look something like $167 million over five years, but the Pelicans won't have any issue handing him that deal with only eight guaranteed contracts on the books next season. There were some initial concerns as to whether Ingram and Zion Williamson would be able to coexist, but that combo has looked outstanding so far with a +7.3 net rating.
Good for BI. He needed to get out of Lebron's shadow to truly blossom - and stay healthy - and while he showed flashes with the Lakers, he is becoming the player we all hoped he would be when the Lakers drafted him #2. It's his turn to get paid after Simmons, Brown, Hield, Murray, Sabonis, Siakam, Levert and DMurray got theirs. The one FA worth watching is Malik Beasley.
Curious what the Pelicans do with Ball as he is eligible for an extension this summer. Have to figure from the 2017 class Tatum and Mitchell are clearly headed for a MAX extension. Presumably Adebayo as well. Probably Fox too. Curious what about Collins (Hawks were apparently willing to move him and they did acquire Capela), Markkanen (health issues and declining production)..... and then Kuzma.

Chicago Bulls president Michael Reinsdorf is researching candidates to take over the team's basketball operations, league sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The current front office structure involving John Paxson-Gar Forman is unlikely to continue following this season, adds Wojnarowski.
Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Bulls are looking for a general manager "with a louder voice," and that conversations have been through back channels without any formal interviews.
The goal is for Paxson to be given a different title within the organization, with Forman moving to the team's scouting department.
----------------------------
There were rumblings here the last couple of weeks that a change may be coming. In a copycat league, the hottest rumor is Mark Bartlestein, long time NBA agent and a Reinsdorf associate, as the guy to take over and try to change the culture in Chicago. Former Bull B.J. Armstrong, who is also an agent, is another name mentioned.

Via NY Post: "According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, the Knicks scouting staff has been instructed the "top priority is a scoring point guard" in the 2020 NBA draft. "
In other words, DSJ is not the answer (his 5.2ppg on 34.1% shooting this season affirming that point), Ntilkina was a horrible pick (which we've known since the 2017 draft) and soon to be 26 year old Elfrid Payton is not the long term answer (which his contract more or less said beforehand).
Welcome aboard LaMelo Ball......

And to think Knicks fans for years were upset that they passed over DSJ for Ntilkina. Have both and they both stink.
Adding a scoring PG to RJ Barrett and Julius Randle sounds equally as terrible, IMO. I get wanting LaMelo Ball because in terms of potential, on and off the court, he makes the most sense to sell to fans of the future. Just not sure it's enough basketballs around for everyone.

Knowing the Knicks, they'll probably get screwed in the lottery and end up with the #4 to #6 pick. Ball will be gone and they'll pass over other PGs like Mannion, Anthony, Haliburton and draft another forward - like Jaden McDaniels from UWash. Rationalizing it by saying they were intrigued by his upside and they did need F depth.
They'll address their PG situation via trade. Like Ntilkina or DSJ and one of the 1st rd picks from Dallas via the Porzingis trade to OKC for Dennis Schroder.
Because Schroder + Barrett + Knox + Randle is clearly a great idea... and then they'll sign some random veteran C to start as they continue their hate for Mitchell Robinson.

The Houston Rockets are doubling-down on small ball, planning to use their two remaining roster openings on 33-year-old forwards DeMarre Carroll and Jeff Green.
Have to wonder how differently things would look for the Spurs if things panned out differently over the summer and either they'd have signed Marcus Morris to a 2 year deal or they'd have not traded Bertans. Instead they ended up with Carroll. I find it really surprising that Carroll was such a bust in San Antonio. He had been a relatively solid starter/reserve the prior six seasons and you figured his style of play was perfect for the Spurs and Coach Pops. From the get-go he looked like an ill-fit and is being paid to go away with decent guaranteed $ beyond this season.
I mean, at this stage, a contender getting a couple guys like Carroll and Green to round out your bench is a pretty solid move - esp. since both will at least work on defense.
On the topic of the Spurs, it's been tough going for them since Duncan retired. They've certainly made a lot of good small moves - especially with the draft - but they've been handing out gross contracts left and right. Add in their return for Kawhi and they just care more about being a "playoff contender" than striving for true contention or full-on rebuilding. Their chase for mediocrity makes them currently essentially just a better version of the Pistons/Hornets.
