Letting Kemba Walker leave still baffles me. I understand his salary concerns may have made it difficult to keep but the Hornets have a boatload of money coming off the books next year (MKG, Williams and Biyombo alone count close to 68 million). Terry Rozier is good but he isn't an All-Star, superstar caliber player and he definitely doesn't put people in the stands and sell jerseys like Kemba. To think you have Nicolas Batum on your roster for 27 million but don't want to pay Kemba his 30+ million/yr is just a poor financial decision to me.

Via Shams: "Dallas is trading forward Isaiah Roby to Oklahoma City for Justin Patton and cash consideration, league sources tell @theathleticnba" Via Tim Cato: "it doesn't sound like Dallas is gonna keep Patton, per source. this is a roster clearing move."
Dallas saves $ as Roby is owed 1.5M next season guaranteed whereas Patton has no $ guaranteed. OKC saves a little $ this season and is very close to getting under the tax threshold.
And if you are Justin Patton, you must feel like you suck pretty badly right about now.
He was the #16 pick just in the 2017 draft and he has now been traded 3 times and will soon be waived for a 2nd time.
And a team desperate for size doesn't want to keep you, despite being a 6'11 241 big man.

Nailed it EE!
Golden State is finalizing a deal to trade C Willie Cauley-Stein to Dallas for a 2020 2nd rounder via Utah, league sources tell ESPN.

In the words of Spock, "It's only logical"
Made too much sense for both sides between DAL needing size and GSW looking to the future.
My guess is Alec Burks is next out the door. He's playing really well (16ppg 4.8rpg 3.2apg 1.1spg 35.8 3fg%) but he's on an expiring contract and unlikely to be retained given how much depth the team has at SG/SF - esp. with a healthy Klay back next season. They could get a quality return for him.

The Hornets have made ample baffling moves but the way they handled the Kemba situation was the most egregious. From the 2018 draft to the deadline to the S&T.
That said, despite allllll their misfires at PG in recent years - including the rotating door of backups since 2012 - they have stumbled upon a really nice player in Devonte Graham, allowing Rozier to be more SG. Not an exciting backcourt but actually pretty darn productive. Graham is turning 25 next month and Rozier is turning 26 in March. Add in PJ Washington, Malik Monk and Miles Bridges - all turning 22 this year - and with a ton of salary coming off the books this summer (MKG, Biyombo, Marvin) and next summer (Batum, Zeller) - and with them owning all their future 1st rd picks (currently 5th pick slot right now) - they have a ton of flexibility to build this team to something special.
Assuming they can make the right draft pick and use their cap space properly, which recent history has told us is not likely.
This is the team that picked MKG, Zeller, Monk, Vonleh and Kaminsky with top 11 picks - and traded SGA for Miles Bridges
This is the team that gave MKG, Batum, Marvin, Zeller extensions totaling 282M
This is also the team that got nothing for guys like Kaminsky, Jeremy Lamb, Courtney Lee, Al Jefferson who walked as free agents
This team needs James Wiseman.

Lakers reject offer from Pistons of D-Rose for Caruso and 2nd round pick
On the one hand, surprising given they wanted Rose and he is having a resurgent season (18.6ppg 2.5rpg 6.0apg 49.7fg%), has stayed relatively healthy and is under contract next season. He'd be a nice boost in the short term.
On the other hand, not surprising because Caruso is a favorite of the team and fans, is also under contract next season but much cheaper, contrary to his hairline he is more than 5 years younger than Rose and is a great fit for this team with his 3pt shooting and energy.
Swap Caruso for Quinn Cook and deal.

I've been a Lakers fan since I was 9, despite living in Ohio. I watched (as well as I could in the pre-League Pass days) almost every dribble of Kobe's career. He was my favorite player ever. And in a weird coincidence, my son was born on Kobe day (8/24). It still doesn't feel real.
And despite all that, I was fine until the news of Gigi and her teammate being on the flight. It was one thing for Kobe to be gone, but he lived an amazing life. He had moments 99% of people could only dream of. But she was 13. Had her whole life ahead of her. As a parent I just couldn't handle that news.
Tuesday night is gonna be really, REALLY rough.

Surreal.
Clearly the basketball world is affected but it's surreal for a guy who looks like he's embraced entering a new era of his life, lose his life so tragically and also for his family to lose their husband AND daughter. I have a young child and I just can't imagine what's going on right now with the Bryant family. Prayers and condolences to all the families who suffered a loss today. The perfect tweet I saw today was "A lot of kids lost their Superman today!" and even as an adult, I find myself floored by this news.

The Kings offered Nemanja Bjelica and a pick to the Lakers for Kyle Kuzma, and Los Angeles countered by asking for Bogdanovic, according to multiple league sources. Sacramento refused.

Bjelica is good but doesn't really address the Lakers' needs. Frankly he's just an older, better shooting, less athletic version of Kuzma.
I also find it surprising the Kings would turn down a Kuz for Bogdanovic type deal. I know the Kings like the latter a lot but he's an impending FA due a big time deal and they have a ton of $ committed to Hield at SG and Barnes at SF. Not to mention Fox is eligible for an extension this summer. Whereas Kuz is signed cheaply through next season and is obviously their preferred PF over Bejlica, who'd become a very strong treade chip. They could easily package Bjelica to Dedmon for an expiring contract and unload a ton of $. Heck, Blazers might be willing to listen for Whiteside.
Fox-Hield-Barnes-Kuz-Bagley...... that's a strong SL.
Say what you will about Barnes and his contract but his shooting, defense, leadership and experience is a necessary fit in such a young, inexperienced lineup that has a combined 0 postseason games from the other four.

By that argument, let in Ron Harper. If the criteria was that they were pretty solid for a crappy/mediocre team before settling in as a role player on championship winning teams. Or let in Michael Cooper or Bruce Bowen, since their whole careers were pretty much what Iguodala has been in Golden State.
Or let in Byron Scott, since he was basically Iguodala on the Sixers but for an actual good team in the Showtime Lakers

Via RW: "Sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic that Detroit is seeking a “lottery-level first-round pick” in exchange for Rose. Vince Ellis of The Detroit Free Press hears essentially the same thing, tweeting that Rose is unlikely to be moved unless a “high” first-round pick is on the table."
Good luck with that.

Via RW: "The Hawks have expressed trade interest in Rockets center Clint Capela, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic. According to Charania, Houston has fielded several calls from teams on Capela, but is unlikely to deal him unless it gets an “overwhelming” offer."
They were linked to Drummond before. Capela makes more sense as a target for the Hawks. That said, can't see HOU trading Capela unless they are blown away. The Hawks certainly have the assets to do that - namely a deal built around John Collins - but won't.

Owner Jim Dolan is targeting Toronto’s Masai Ujiri

Good luck with that. I don't see why Ujiri would go to New York given everything that comes with it. Dolan is better off picking some young executive but of course the Knicks way is to target a big name and fall on your face.
Edit: According to Woj, Dolan has already interviewed one candidate for the job and the idea is the need to hire a GM is greater than waiting Ujiri whom the Knicks don't want to offer draft compensation for.
