A severe injury has been ruled out for Zion Williamson's right knee, but he is expected to miss a period of weeks to start regular season, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
The guy is listed at 285 pounds. Have to figure all of his explosive moves are torture on his knees. Unless he loses weight and/or expands his game to have some semblance of finesse to it, I can see him dealing with a myriad of injuries early on.

Whoah whoah whoah. They still have studs in Ball and Ingram! (I say mostly jokingly).
The Pelicans should still be good with Jrue, Redick, Favors, Ball, Ingram, Melli, Moore, Hart, Okafor etc. but yeah, from a marketing standpoint this is a big blow because the NBA was clearly looking to feature Zion early on.

Sam Amick of The Athletic reports the Pacers are in active trade talks regarding big man Domantas Sabonis because they are far apart on contract negotiations. Word is their asking price is high.
I've long been a Sabonis fan. He's a quality big who in only 24.8mpg last season put up 14.1ppg 9.3rpg 2.9apg 59fg%. Give him 34mpg as a starting C and no doubt he'll be a big time producer.
Of course the idea of a trade is difficult because you'd need to find a team who needs/wants Sabonis, is willing to meet the Pacers' asking price and is willing to pay Sabonis what he wants.
My first though was San Antonio because he just feels like a Spur and they are probably one of the few teams who still appreciates a low post scorer but I think Charlotte makes a ton of sense because that team badly needs some building blocks and the frontcourt is utterly lackling there.
Marvin Williams + 2 1st rd picks (with some protections) for Sabonis and the contract of McDermott works. The Pacers get cap relief/picks + Williams actually could work well at PF next to Turner with his 3pt range The Hornets can add Sabonis to Rozier, Bridges, Monk, PJ Washington, Bacon and have an actual core to work with.

Kings sign Hield to 4 year 94 million...with bonuses that can reach $106 million
Divac caved...good luck with all that money tied into Hield & Barnes

I actually think the Kings did OK when you look at the contract and that Hield wanted 110M guaranteed. My issue with Hield was more so him viewing 90M as an insult rather than viewing him not worthy of a sizable investment. It's 4 years 86M guaranteed and is a declining deal with the last year being 18M. An additional 8M is considered "likely incentives". The remaining 12M aren't considered" "likely". With the incentives being team and played based - which I personally am in favor of as it keeps the player motivated and invested in team success. Really all contracts for non-Superstars should be structured this way. I do feel it's overpaying on some level for Hield + Barnes but the team does avoid a major distraction and does lock up a very good young player for the next 5 years. Hield can be an elite shooter and Barnes is a versatile two way player and strong locker room presence, so both bring legit value. For a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 2006 and arguably has it's best roster since that point, I can understand why the priority is to keep their talent to the best of their ability. You don't go spending the type of $ they did on Dedmon, Ariza, Cory Joseph etc. just to suddenly go frugal on Hield.

Yeah I think 4 years/94 million is pretty fair for Hield in this market. If he continues to progress alongside Fox, that's their backcourt for a long time. At this point with the way contracts are being dished out in the NBA, I no longer ask if a player is "worth" it. It's just what the market is.
It's much better than Jamal Murray's 5 year/190 million dollar extension. No way I believe the gap between those 2 players is 100 million.

According to Woj, one of the incentives is finishing Top 10 in 3pt shooting. It's a great way to reward a player for being a strong shooter, an obviously valuable asset these days, but also some relief if they have a down year.

Pistons chose Christian Wood over Joe Johnson for their 15th spot.
Johnson is reportedly dealing with an injury. The Pistons have sufficient depth and frankly keeping the 24 year old Wood makes more sense for them anyways.

"Boston Morons forward Jaylen Brown has agreed to a four-year, $115M million contract extension, agent Jason Glushon tells ESPN."
"Brown's agent @jglushon and Danny Ainge negotiated much of the deal over the weekend in Boston. This is Ainge's first rookie extension deal as GM since Rajon Rondo in 2009."
Wow. Suddenly that Buddy Hield contract is looking a lot better. Jaylen is a nice young player but the guy is coming off a 13ppg 4.2rpg 1.4apg 34.4 3fg% season where he started just 25 of 74 games.
The team is going to be paying an awful lot of $ to Kemba, Hayward, Smart and Jaylen in 2020-2021.... when btw Tatum is up for an extension.

yea, would have traded whatever I could get for Jaylen at the break and throw that at Tatum. Especially if they think Hayward returns to even 90% of what he was

"Indiana Pacers center Domas Sabonis has agreed to a four-year, $79.4M contract extension"
Pacers are making him a full time starter and building that core with Turner, Brogdon and eventually Oladipo. (They also have TJ Warren, Jeremy Lamb locked up the next 3 seasons)

With Turner being both inside (and likes to play more so outside) I dont see why they just didn't want to make Turner/Sabonis at the 5 &4 work anyways..great signing..better than the Hield and Brown

When Dipo is healthy, they have a really solid potential playoff 9 man rotation with Brogdon, Oladipo, Warren, Sabonis, Turner, McConnell, Lamb, Justin Holiday and McBuckets.

Dejounte Murray gets 4 years $64mil from Spurs
Quite the payday for someone who missed all of last season due to injury. That said, he closed his 2nd season solidly (10.5ppg 6.7rpg 3.1apg 2.0spg 46fg%) and made the All-Defense 2nd team. He has big time upside and the Spurs love him. Between him, White, Walker a lot of youth and upside in that backcourt. A nice bounceback for a team that had basically been Parker, Manu and Danny Green forever.
They have a lot of cap flexibility as well. As it stands, the team only has Murray under contract for 2021-22. Walker, Samanic and Keldon Johnson have team options for about 9.5M. Only 1.35M of Carroll's 7M contract is guaranteed. Derrick White is the main free agent in 2021, if not extended - although guys like Aldridge, Gay, Mills and perhaps Lyles will be FAs but Aldridge will be 36 and probably headed back to Portland, Gay will be 35, Mills 33 and who knows with Lyles. The team could extend DeRozan, of which their were talks, but even if they do extend him they could have a lot of cap space in 2021. So extending Murray now makes sense and if he is healthy and continues to flash, that contract could prove to be a bargain.

So here are Buddy Hield's annual incentives over his new 4 year deal: Being named an All-Star ($500K) Kings make the playoffs ($500K) Kings make it to Western Semifinals ($250K) Kings make it to Western Finals ($500K)
Kings make it to NBA Finals ($1MM)
The West is stacked, in terms of guards vying for an All-Star spot and obviously teams trying to make the playoffs. Wouldn't surprise me if Hield didn't make ANY $ here over his contract..... but I could certainly see him making some should he and the team continue their upward ascent. Perhaps one All-Star game and two playoff appearances.
If he plays 70 games AND: Makes at least 85.0% of his free throws ($500K) Averages fewer than two turnovers per game ($500K) Leads the NBA in made three-pointers ($500K) Has a defensive rating below 110.5 ($500K)
For context Hield shot 88.6% on FTs, averaged 1.8 turnovers per game last season, had a defensive rating of 114 and was 4th in 3PM at 278 Personally I can see him doing the FT thing every year and being under 2 turnovers a couple times. Not overly confident on the others - especially as the Kings improve, he will have more competition for shots to hit those threes.
That said, it's cool to see a contract structure like this that really pushes the player to continue to improve AND also have an investment in team success.

Hard to lead the league in 3PM playing with guys like Harden and Curry. So barring major injury to both, I don't see that happening at all. For context, Harden had 100 more 3 pointers made than him last year and Curry had 80 more but played in 13 less games.
The turnovers I can see maybe once. The problem is the more the offensively he's going to want the ball, the more turnovers he'll likely have. But the free throws are definitely within range and if he took a concentrated effort into becoming a more defensive player, the defensive rating is possible. As far as the team goals, I can see a playoff appearance in those 4 years.

Some decent FAs still out there:
Jamal Crawford, Iman Shumpert, JR Smith, Corey Brewer, Joe Johnson, Carmelo Anthony, Kenneth Faried, Luc Mbah a Moute, Marcin Gortat, Joakim Noah, Devin Harris, Raymond Felton
If it was 2013, this roster would be really freakin' good

Via Hollinger, DeJounte Murray's new contract has 3 annual incentives for $500k each: True shooting percentage of 58&+, 125 three-pointers+ in a season and make an All-Defense team.
Good motivation for Murray to improve his shooting/range. Like I said for Hield, it's nice to see the teams handing out contracts like this.... and see players accepting it.

I had them making the playoffs and being a potential threat if Klay was active. The team will say they aren't tanking. They don't need to. They'll lose just fine on their own and have extra reason not to rush back Klay.
The Kings are 0-5. It's obviously very early and I could end up wrong but my Spurs vs Kings bet with JB is looking good. The Thunder, Pelicans, Grizzlies are rebuilding squads. The Suns may be 3-2 but they'll crash back down to earth sooner than later.
The playoffs could very well be Jazz, Rockets, Lakers, Spurs, Clippers, Nuggets, Blazers and whomever can hold on the longest to a decent start between Phoenix, Dallas, Minnesota - my $ on Dallas with Luka, Porzongis and company.

Tanking would do them some good. They owe a first rounder to the Nets in the Durant-Russell deal that's top 20 protected through 2025 when it turns into a 2nd. Under normal circumstances, you would expect Golden State to be a top 10 team in the league thus surrendering the pick sooner rather than later but here may be an opportunity to get into the lottery with Curry and Klay out for significant time and maybe land you a great prospect which they desperately need for the future for basketball and cap related purposes. I'm sure if somehow they won the lottery, basketball fans would scream "fix" to high hell though.
I'd keep Curry out as long as possible and let Russell play well enough to move him by the deadline for another pick. That team needs to get young, high end talent because even if Klay was back, I'm not sure they can sustain close to the success they've had before just because of age.
