Lakers are interested in Wesley Matthews and had strong belief Rondo would leave via FA

Dennis Schroeder for 28th pick and Danny Green. That should eliminate Rondo, maybe Lakers buy them a 2nd rounder. Absolutely ends Rondo coming back and I'm sure LA will be picking in the draft at some point on Wednesday. Really like this deal. You aren't depleting the team defense too much swapping Schroder for Green, but you've given yourselves an electric shot creator and pretty good playmaker which helps towards your biggest deficiencies last season. I would 100% be on the phone with Serge Ibaka's people offering up every cent of that $9.3M MLE. He is certainly worth it and worth hardcapping yourself for. We all know the deal. We ride this out until LBJ hangs it up and then try our best to pivot to AD + ? for the next phase of Lakers Basketball.

If Bradley opts-in and the Lakers can lure Ibaka via the MLE, a potential starting lineup of Schroeder, Bradley, Lebron, AD, Ibaka would be really impressive. If they further load up by nabbing Wes Matthews for the vet min, increase the role of Horton-Tucker and can convince Howard to come back on the cheap - along with having Caruso/Kuz still - that type of depth and firepower would certainly allow Lebron/AD to coast the first few weeks of the season.

Trade Green + #28 for Schroeder Buy a 2nd round pick to use on a C like Nick Richards from Kentucky Convince Bradley to opt-in and Howard to come back for the vet min to keep as much of the "gang together" to repeat
Re-sign KCP to 3 year deal using bird rights
Sign Ibaka to 3 year deal using MLE Lure Wes Matthews for the vet min with a promise of a decent role off the bench and a shot at a ring
Bring back Dudley to be the Lakers' version of Udonis "assistant coach" Haslem Offer JR Smith the vet min, which he'll gladly accept Offer Patrick Patterson the vet min, which he'll probably accept. He brings range, defense, is ringless and won't whine about minutes
Keep Devontae Cacock and Nick Richards on two-way deals
PG: Bradley, Schroeder, Cook SG: KCP, Caruso, JR Smith
SF: Lebron, W. Matthews, Horton-Tucker
PF: AD, Kuz, Dudley
C: Ibaka, Howard, Patterson
Two Way: Cacock, Richards
Solid and very realistic.

Dwight Howard on FA: “I would love to come back and play for the Lakers again. Hopefully, this year, they give me a contract; that’s the biggest thing. I don’t want to play for free anymore. This year, it was like, ‘OK, I’ll do whatever.’ But I think I’ve earned… a contract.”
Yea, he'll be backing up Brook Lopez or DeAndre Jordan if the Nets trade Allen

I appreciate a player wanting to get paid what he thinks he is worth. That said, this is ridiculously tone deaf on the part of Howard. I mean, a lot of people are being laid off, furloughed, small businesses having their doors closed, livelihoods ripped apart, relying on food donations to put food on the table and any number of financial issues at this time. No one needs to hear Dwight Howard classify earning $2.5 million dollars this past season as playing "for free". Even prorated.
Then again this is the same guy who seemed to disregard proper mask use and questioned masks in general in the bubble, so he clearly remains as dim as ever.
I appreciate Howard setting aside his ego to accept the role/contract the Lakers gave him. We got what we wanted out of you. Now you can go away and be the usual annoying version of yourself elsewhere - where I'm sure complaining about his touches on offense is imminent.

In fairness to Howard, he did donate his salary he received in the bubble last year to charity. That said, I doubt seriously that's what he meant and more inclined to believe he meant he took a paycut as EE alluded to. Probably the wrong choice of words but again it's Howard so the shock factor isn't there.
Fact is with Howard his play in the bubble and this year probably won't secure him a lucrative long term deal anywhere. I think most execs still view him as problematic as he is productive. Not to mention big men of his skill are slowly being phased out especially in starter roles. If he's lucky, I can see him with 3 year deal maybe in the 20+ million ballpark range. I think that's on the high end.

A lot of athletes do a lot for charity and I certainly don't take that away from them - and frankly wish we heard more about stuff like that and less about things like Antonio Brown going crazy yet again. Choice of words matter though. We are in a terrible spot right now across the country and people turn to sports for a positive distraction. Hearing a millionaire rant about being underpaid in that fashion is simply tone-deaf to our current situation - but of course that would require the player to have a level of empathy in order to be cognizant of what they say. Empathy Howard sure as hell doesn't have given his attitude on masks. I agree though that we shouldn't expect anything different from Howard, who more often than not comes across an unlikable, self-centered diva. Expecting Howard to deliver what is ultimately a valid point about getting paid what he is worth in an eloquent fashion is unfair of me. Really it's unfair of me to expect athletes as a whole to always watch what they say. Just like it's unfair for me to wish people on twitter actually cared about things like spelling, proper punctuation and truth.
I guess for me, I just don't like Dwight Howard all that much. Like I said, I appreciate what he did for the Lakers but now that his desire to be the "good guy/teammate" to rehab his image has run out, he is free to leave because I'm not interested in the narcissistic version of Howard on the roster.
Howard will be 35 in a couple weeks. He's still a defensive presence and maintains an impressive amount of athleticism but he has an injury history and an offensive style of basketball best fit for the 1990s. I am curious what type of offers he'll get. It'd actually be fun to see him on the Clippers.

Amidst the flurry of signing undrafted free agents, Lakers jump in and sign G Zavier Simpson. 4 year player from Michigan. Probably an Exhibit 10 signing.
As you all know I'm a Michigan fan. Didn't quite work out with Darius Morris a while ago for the Lakers but Mo Wagner showed flashes before he was traded. The Wolverines have turned out some decent players the last few years. Levert looks awesome. THJ. Burke. GRob3. Poole showed flashes as a rook for Golden State. Obviously can't really compare an undrafted guy to them but the program hasn't been a total dumpster fire - unlike it's super disappointing football team, in terms of expectations anyhow.
Well Simpson is a solid pass first guy with a decent shot. Worth a look.

Nice story with Cook..but I thought he'd have a bigger role..if he gets the minutes somewhere else he's productive enough to stay on a roster
*would fit on the Clippers maybe lol

Cook badly wanted to be a Laker as his late dad was a huge fan - and so was he. He got to live his dream and earn a ring. Wish the kid the best as he hopefully gets a better opportunity elsewhere. I'm sure he showed enough to latch on somewhere.

Lakers sign 6'7 225 F Tres Trinkle, undrafted FA from Oregon State, to Exhibit 10 deal 18.5ppg 6.8rpg 3.2apg 1.7spg 34.5 3fg% in his 5th year senior year with OSU.
Well-rounded offensive player with a good jumper, high bball IQ. Not athletic or a good defender. At best you're kind of hoping for a lesser version of Duncan Robinson.

Lakers resign KCP to 3 year 40M deal.
Figured this was coming given they lost Bradley and traded Green and had the bird rights to exceed the cap to bring him back Plus they had extra roster spots after losing Rondo and waiving Cook PG: Schroeder SG: KCP, Caruso SF: Lebron, Wes Matthews, Horton-Tucker PF: AD, Kuz C: McGee, Harrell Once they re-sign AD, that's only 10 guys. So still some moves to be made. With only the vet min to offer but there are A LOT of veteran free agents out there that could be legitimately had for cheap.

Wow.
Lakers trade 2nd rd pick to Cleveland for them to take Javale
Lakers then sign Marc Gasol. His career comes full circle after being drafted by the Lakers many moons ago PF: AD, Kuz C: Gasol, Harrell
Imagine going from Javale + Dwight to M. Gasol + Harrell at C.
All the people with Pau Gasol jerseys rejoice as you can now recycle the jersey (even if the # is different, no one will care/notice)

Have absolutely loved this off-season for the Lakers!
Hard to say they've gotten "better" since, you know, it's hard to be better than champions. But I will say that they are more balanced and should be more fun to watch as a viewer this year.
Love the team from last year, but it was definitely hard to watch a stifling defensive team who's offense ground to a halt once one individual player went to the bench. So having Schröeder and Harrel off the bench should help things.

Gasol signs 2 year deal
Lakers also getting Jordan Bell and Alfonzo McKinnie from Cleveland. They have non guaranteed deals but to make the trade work they have to guarantee part of their salary. This isn't to say the Lakers won't just do that and still waive them but both can be of use if kept. McKinnie was a rotation player for the Dubs when they made the Finals in 2019 and Jordan Bell was on the Dubs 2018 Championship team and has value as an energy guy - like a poor man's Harrell but lankier, better shot blocking

So basically the two guys I mentioned for the Clippers
Lebron might just have Delly come on board.
Imagine Delly + Caruso on the court together. That'd be fun.

Wow. That means he accepted the vet min. I'm shocked.... and pleased.
A frontcourt rotation of Lebron, Morris, AD, Kuz, Harrell, Marc Gasol. I never would have guessed anything like this.
Backcourt rotation of Schroeder, KCP, Caruso, Wes Matthews.
Also have Horton-Tucker and we'll see what the team does with McKinnie and Jordan Bell but looks like this team is perhaps another veteran PG away from being locked and loaded.

2 Roster spots left 4.5 mil to spend room for 2 vet mins
Is there a list of remaining Free Agents?
Hell, I'd like to have Jamal Crawford just to keep him in the league Stevenson & Swaggy should still be in the league, but I their chances are done, JR Smith maybe too

Assuming the team still has Bell/McKinnie......
At guard, as much fun as looking at more aging rejects is, the team should consider younger options. Emmanuel Mudiay. Ky Bowman. Frank Jackson. Frank Mason. Sterling Brown. Jerian Grant. These are some of the younger guys but for all the jokes about Dellavedova I make, the one guy I'd target is Tyler Johnson. Might be a tough pill for him to swallow a vet min contract after a 4 year 50M deal but he needs to rebuild his value and he can do that serving as a backup combo guard on the defending champs. He's shown in the past that he is a quality player and he's still only 28. If he can earn playing time - which is feasible in this backcourt, he's bound to look nice (the luxury of playing next to Lebron/AD) to re-enter FA in 2021.
I realize it's not exciting but I'd just throw a flier on Thon Maker on a 3 year minimum deal where only the 1st year is guaranteed. Gasol is 100 years old and Harrell can opt out next summer. Maker is only 23 and is still a 7'0 footer who can shoot the three and protect the rim. He'd honestly never have to play next season with the options ahead of him. So play him in the G-League, have the training staff get the guy some bulk and it's a low risk, decent reward move to develop a long term option. This is the kind of shark move the Heat do and the Lakers should follow suit.
PG: Schroeder, Caruso, T. Johnson
SG: KCP, W. Matthews, Horton-Tucker
SF: Lebron, Morris, McKinnie
PF: AD, Kuz, Bell
C: Gasol, Harrell, Maker
That's what I'd do.
