I feel this needs its own thread being this is a east to west coast board now. Kobe meant alot to alot of people and today is a very sad day. I always wanted him on the Knicks, but I appreciated him for what he was to the Lakers. I'm very sad he's gone and even more so his daughter is gone.

of course some are responding with the hate and vitriol that is so common now and days on social media.. the memes about "marking themselves safe" from flying with Kobe..
bringing up the incident from Colorado..
I mean if you have nothing nice to say just keep it to yourself..
my little brother texted me this morning and it said "Kobe died".. I thought he was referring to LeBron passing him last night on the scoring list or something.. but then I remembered Kobe posting his compliments last night.. quick check of social media and I saw the initial reports.. so gut wrenching.. and yeah having GiGi on board was even more devastating..
having a 13 year old daughter myself I can't imagine.. obviously I took a different career path (Air Force) but my career paralleled Kobe's as I started in 1996 and did twenty years before retiring in 2016.. Tuesday night is going to be extra emotional.. and it being a Clipper game as well.. whew.. wearing my #8 jersey today.. probably wear it all week 🙏

I had to disconnect from social media and try to focus on my classwork but it's been a difficult day for me. Much like you mark, I've grown up watching up Kobe. Grown with Kobe. Even with me not being a diehard Lakers fan for many years, there was a connection with Kobe Bryant to me and that's why it makes it even more difficult than this tragedy already is.
It's 2 things that will always standout with me when it comes to Kobe: Respect and dedication.
He respected the game so much and never cheated it. And you can see, especially in his later years, how that transcended over to other areas of his life especially with being a father. We know about the personal issues he had earlier on but I think, for the most part, we all saw a 18 year old kid literally mature right in front of our eyes. Which leads to the 2nd thing: Dedication.
The fact that he had this talent but worked harder than anyone is what resonates with people. You want our athletes to fully nurture their talent by working hard and he exemplified that. It's probably not a basketball player alive that can say he outworked Kobe Bryant. He's one of the first players we've seen who said he was going to be great and worked his ass off to become that. Regardless of how you feel about him as a player or person, it's hard to not respect that.
This one stings. And learning about his daughter and the other families involved, it made today difficult for so many. Hearts out to Lakers fans. I know the joy he has brought to you over the years so I know this isn't easy... it isn't easy for a lot of us.

Incredibly tough. Cried all day, and was good this morning until my brother in law just said, "sorry about Kobe" On the 15 years or so on the Scout boards with you all..I often said I was Kobe fan first then a Lakers fan. Tragic. This has tore me up more than I would have imagined.
I too need to say off social media and the tv to keep being reminding. I punished myself by watching NBATV and Brian Shaw try to get through it to only switch over to ESPN2 to listen to Jay Will.
Sad time
I did appreciate a quote I read:
"The whole world just shifted on the strength of one human. Your life is an extraordinary opportunity. Never ever forget that"

and Dwight Howard has made it known he was trying to get Kobe involved in the dunk contest to assist him on one of his dunks. Surely Kobe wouldn't have done it..but I fully expect Howard to break out the #8 jersey on one of his dunks. Maybe he'll even try and go between his legs like the dunk that won Kobe his dunk contest.
Saw a recommendation of the East All-stars should all wear #8 and the West wear #24. I'm sure there will be plenty and more dedications to come.

Definitely going to be an emotional and tribute lead All-Star weekend. Sadly this tragedy almost makes you forget that David Stern also passed away recently so I'm sure between Stern and Kobe, we'll see a lot of current and former players, coaches, execs, owners pay tribute to both players. I like the idea of All-Stars wearing #8 and #24 out of respect for him. But even if they don't, I'm sure a lot of players will show their individual respect and admiration to both.
Still feels weird to read he's gone. You just knew this was a guy who was going to be around to mentor and educate younger players on aspects of the game, on and off the court.

The NBA has postponed the Los Angeles Lakers-L.A. Clippers game scheduled for Tuesday.
"The decision was made out of respect for the Lakers organization, which is deeply grieving the tragic loss of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people in a helicopter crash."

Shouldn't be too hard to reschedule what's essentially a home game for both teams. Lakers won't return to court till Friday so they'll have ample time to rest, recover and do what they need to do regarding the situation.

Last night was no easier, I recorded The Jump, Around the Horn, PTI, Sportscenter. Heard Reggie, T-Mac, Barnes, Horry, and more speak..tough. Tonight on TNT will be hour long pregame with Chuck, Kenny, Shaq and Earnie about Kobe..that will be tough as well.
I don't think they've recovered the body..or all of them..so whenever the coroner does and all that is finished..which may be a while..imagine the funeral would be after.
Trying not to read reports of how the pilot should have never attempted to fly, about it being irresponible, etc. What's done is done, just wish it all never happened.

I've managed to get caught up on classwork and other stuff. I can't watch ESPN right now. As soon as I think I'm good, here comes another story or tribute that just rips off the scab. I'm just going to take this week decompressing and focusing on other stuff. I set my scout lineup going against YoungThundercats just to be sure because my sports intake will be limited.

I'm just taking the punishment. Recording all I can...the Jimmy Fallon segment was difficult, Jimmy Kimmell did one as well and replayed best of Kobe episode. I'll have to watch Shaq and the crew tonight. Watching Jerry West do all his rounds was hard as well. I'll just take it all in. I was as die hard as die hard can get for Kobe fans.

I was actually in Calabasas Sunday morning because my wife wanted to go to Bristol Farms looking for some special food container. It's about a 20 minute drive from our house. We left and had brunch nearby and suddenly my phone blows up. Like others, I was praying this was a hoax or "fake news". That said, once Woj reported it, it became real to me. I couldn't eat finish my french toast because I was so sick to my stomach. The wife and I spent all day just watching TV and trying to digest everything - and it got worse once news came out that Gigi was on the helicopter and when the total went from 5 to 9 people on board. I actually had yesterday as a pre-planned day off anyways. I tried to take my mind off things. I worked out at home with the TV off. I went to the movie theater, by myself, to watch 1917. I rented Gemini Man and watched that. In the end, I couldn't help but think about it and end up watching more stuff on TV. Around the Horn. PTI. Sportscenter. His final game on ESPN. Coverage of LA Live, his gym in PA, outside the Mamba Academy. All the tributes. All the talk of Gigi. Like, legitimately I shed tears more times than I care to admit.
I don't have any thoughts on people who bring up the "Colorado incident". On the one hand, it's ill-timed as his family mourns and I question the motives of some who did (Attention seeking much?). When you die, do you want someone at your funeral drudging up your mistakes? On the other hand, it's part of his history and what made him such a complex person and also part of his redemption story.
I weep for what we lost in this legend/icon. I weep for what we missed out on with the next chapter of Kobe's life, which was already in full swing. That he was able to accomplish so much since retiring is amazing and only exemplifies his work ethic, his genius and his ambition. I weep for his contributions to womens' sports and also for not being able to see Gigi fulfill her destiny as the next Mamba. I weep for the 7 others who lost their lives - including two teenage girls - and the families impacted. Most of all, I weep for Los Angeles. We lost a huge part of our collective soul. Sports and Music are the two things that unite people. Of all races. Of all religions. Of all socioeconomic levels. That we are all hurting over this just shows the impact Kobe has had on our city. And the whole world.
I'll forever treasure the memories and the sheer moments of glee Kobe brought into my life. I feel like he was a part of my family because he loomed so large. As I sit here at work wearing my Kobe jersey, I'm trying my best to power through. It's what Kobe would want. That Mamba Mentality.
#RIPMamba

It was. When we were driving towards Calabasas I actually noted to my wife it was weirdly foggy. So when I heard about the crash, I immediately assumed it was weather related in terms of impaired visibility.

It's been reported that LAPD grounded their helicopters which are causing people to question why the trip happened. Just sucks, period. I know people are looking for answers, some looking for blame, but in the end 9 people are gone. Part of me doesn't want it turn out to be human error because people can get so nasty towards things like this.
In other news, the NBA is letting players who wear #8 or #24 change their number out of respect for Kobe. Nets Spencer Dinwiddie and Magic's Terrance Ross have announced the change to #26 and #31 respectively.

So 3 fairly solid swingmen are changing their numbers and the guy who barely plays decides to keep it. Figures.
I figure Kemba will keep #8 Other guys with 8/24 include Zhaire Smith, Biyombo, Bruno Fernando, Mason Plumlee, Jarred Vanderbilt, Markieff Morris, Burks, Harkless, Dillon Brooks, Okafor, Gallinari, Ariza, Bogdanovic, Hield, Mudiay.
Gallinari should change his. He's from Italy, which obviously has a connection to Kobe. Then again, he is likely getting traded and could just take a new jersey # at that time. Ariza should change his out of respect for his former teammate. Hield should keep it because he, unlike Alize Johnson, actually would do justice in Kobe's honor.

Of those who spoke, West and Shaq and Wade were the most heartfelt.
I also felt bad for Rick Fox when he discussed how his name was dragged in as it was thrown out he was on the helicopter too (And then subsequently DFish and Kenny talking about how believing Fox was there made it worst)
Honestly, I could do without Chuck talking, esp. since he kept reiterating he barely knew him. The guy rambles with no coherent point.
I also realize it was a solemn conversation but I couldn't help but laugh every time they kept bringing up greatness.... and always left out Kenny Smith because, well, obviously he wasn't on the level of the rest as players (Kobe, Shaq, Chuck, Wade).

I couldn't watch it. I knew Shaq's words would be too much for me. At some point I may look at it and I've seen a few clips already but I know, regardless of their relationship past and present, it hurts hard for him. Their names will always be linked together. You think of the Lakers era, you think of Shaq and Kobe.
Sucks about Rick Fox. Can't imagine your family thinking you're gone and trying to comfort those about that false rumor in the midst of grieving yourself about the loss of a friend and former teammate. The information era can be cruel sometimes especially to those in the spotlight.
Yeah Kenny Smith always gets the short end of the stick when they are mentioning greatness but it's also equally hilarious because Chuck gets it when they talk about championship and championship mentality. Shaq, Isiah Thomas and Wade are really the only regulars on that show that can speak on both ends of it.

They are discussing where to hold Kobe's memorial.
The when is obviously undetermined and dependent on a lot of things - namely when his family will be ready.
The where was essentially either Staples, Rose Bowl or the LA Coliseum. From all accounts Staples has been ruled out because it "only" holds about 20,000 people - which speaks volumes to as to how many would be expected to attend. Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, is considered not local enough. So LA Coliseum and its 80,000 seat capacity and the wide open surrounding areas seems like the logical choice.
I don't know if I personally will attend but I assume they'll air it on TV and I for sure will at the least watch.

I'm not big on public funerals. Not really big on funerals, period. I always said when my time comes, just have a memorial with friends and family to share stories about me. Skip all the funeral service stuff because as of right now, I plan to be cremated anyway.
But I also get I'm not a 5 time NBA champion whose life meant a lot to people. Tough situation for the Bryant family because as much as people want to give them their time to grieve, the public also wants their "closure" as well. Wherever it ends up, I'm sure it will be a star-studded event that will be hard to accommodate all his loved ones, friends and just general public. Maybe in addition to it, they'll do something for the public as well. I remember I wanted to drive to Louisville just to see Muhammad Ali's body travel through the streets. Something like that I could probably handle.

I figure it'll be similar to what was done for Michael Jackson back in 2009, which was at the Staples Center. On a grander scale naturally with the enlarged attendance.
Michael Jackson's funeral obviously had big names from the music industry and featured a lotttttt of singing.
Figure Kobe's will have big names from the sports world (media/athletes/coaches/execs), with random celebrities mixed-in (Ice Cube, Kanye, Jay-Z etc) and feature more videos of basketball highlights among other things (I imagine a lot of him + Gigi, which will be heart wrenching) and then a focus on stories/eulogies. Kobe did a lot for the community that was not made public because he did not seek the PR. I figure with his passing and people wanting to recognize his kindness, we'll hear more and more of these acts made public.

While by the time the end of scout came..we were basically down to 6-7 of us..but when something big happened like a trade or signing is when everybody popped in. I imagine with Kobe's death ole JB, LB, coolhand, etc etc would pop in. I hate couldn't have closure or keep it going with all of them after so many years.
